DRAW WITH US: SEEING IS BELIEVING - A DRAWING CLASS FOR THE PONDERER

SEEING IS BELIEVING is a study course for the curious, the one who ponders, the person who wants to stretch their way into perceiving in an open observation-based structure. Through observing deeply, we can learn to draw what we truly see. The class supports observation through drawing what is around us, beginning with curated still life setups using charcoal, rag drawing paper, soft lead pencils, and erasers. Discourse and tea will happen as well, as will discussion of the readings and experiences during the drawing process. The objective is to slow down, truly see what is in front of us, both in drawing and in life.

There are three independent salon sessions for this class, with directed readings, on January 31, February 21, and March 21. Students can sign up for one or more sessions. On March 21, there will be an exhibition of artists’ work from all three sessions, with a reception. (Shelley Horton-Trippe. Cost is $90 per session with a $20 materials fee to be collected at the class. If you register for all three classes, the cost is $300.00 with no materials fee).

BLEND POETRY AND COLLAGE WITH US

BLEND POETRY AND COLLAGE WITH US

Olive Rush loved poetry. Titles to her paintings were often lines from poems – from William Blake (The moon like a flower in Heaven’s high bower) to e e Cummings (Into the sea of sky, Light walks). These lines add layers of meaning to her paintings.

In this workshop, we will incorporate poetry to deepen one of the most basic art forms – collage. We learn this form in kindergarten. But let’s explore what scraps of paper cut from discarded magazines and catalogs can show us, by incorporating poetry into our collages - to discover meanings hidden within our materials, within our perspectives, and within ourselves. Participants are invited to bring a favorite poem, whether their own, a beloved classic, or a new favorite: some words that move you. Deco will also bring poetry that will inspirer you! The workshop will conclude with a celebratory circle as we present our work to each other and describe our thoughts and process. ($90 for a three hour class with Deco)

PAINT WITH US: MAPS OF IMAGINARY PLACES

PAINT WITH US: MAPS OF IMAGINARY PLACES

Olive Rush wrote,“After all this study from nature, little reliance on sketches or on natural objects seems necessary. My painting is now done intuitively and thru sympathy with the spirit of nature, its miracle and mystery. I try to reveal through form, line, color, what I see and feel. It is a searching for relations and harmonies to bring all together into one whole, an overall pattern, what the Chinese call ‘Rhythmic vitality’. I have made many experiments, made many failures, but always in the search to find myself.”

Combining moments of meditation with playful mark-making, this class explores how we remember and relate to the environment around us. We will practice technical skills, focusing on watercolors as medium, to create landscapes and cartographies of places we have visited or fantastical versions of invented locales. ($90 for a three hour class with Mia Calsi)

PAINT WITH US: INTUITIVE COLOR THEORY

PAINT WITH US: INTUITIVE COLOR THEORY

In a 1951 New Mexico Quarterly interview, Olive Rush explained the importance of emotion in her painting: “I paint when I feel the necessity of transmitting some strong emotion that I experience … Painting should be infectious. The beholder should be moved, after quiet contemplation, by the feeling that the artist himself experienced.”

In this class, we will explore a practical approach to developing personal color palettes for artistic expression. Uncover the colors that make your paintings feel like YOU through intuitive painting exercises and experiments with acrylic paint on paper and canvas.(Alison Jones Hunt, $75 with $20 materials fee)

EXPLORE CREATIVITY THROUGH FRAGRANCE: CRAFT SCENTS AND CANDLES WITH US

EXPLORE CREATIVITY THROUGH FRAGRANCE: CRAFT SCENTS AND CANDLES WITH US

In a 1943 letter to her friend Ethel Leach, Olive Rush wrote, “Vines hanging heavy with the various kinds of grapes ripening at different times and so fragrant that all the patios and garden are sweet.” It is easy to imagine that Olive Rush took as much inspiration from the aromas and fragrances of her beloved garden as she did the blooms and fruits she cultivated each year. Sweetness in spring and summer, musky and earthy tones from the decay of autumn, crisp and even cold notes in winter.

This class is an immersive offering that encourages participants to interact with fragrance as a creative medium. Through a series of exercises that include writing and watercolor, participants will be guided to create their own fragrances, and will pour two candles using them, with non-toxic candle oils and 100% soy wax. All materials will be provided. ($135 for a 3-hour class with Jessica Demshar).

Invitations were cherished! All Olive’s friends came to those parties - the Santa Fe and visiting artists, the poets and writers, the Pueblo artists and their families, the powerhouse women of New Mexico, the Indian School teachers and students, Rush’s Hispanic farming neighbors, the early Quakers, and the musicians.
