TEA PARTY WITH US IN OLIVE RUSH’S GARDEN

During Canyon Road’s Summer Walk, join us for tea and punch in Olive Rush’s garden — and enjoy her paintings in the house too. From 1920 through much of the 1960’s, there were many tea parties each year in that garden! Rush and her friends talked, planned, nibbled cookies, picked fruit, baked bread in the horno, danced and listened to jazz at those parties.

Invitations were cherished! All Rush’s friends came - the Santa Fe artists (including Gustav Baumann, who spiked the punch during Prohibition), the Pueblo artists and their families (including Awah Tsireh who wandered into the house to read Rush’s art books), the Indian School students and teachers (including Julian Martinez and Tonita Pena), the powerhouse women of New Mexico (including Elizabeth White, Margarita Dietrich, Dorothy Stewart, and Mary Cabot Lodge), Rush’s Hispanic farming neighbors, and the early nucleus of the Santa Fe Quaker Meeting (Jane Baumann, Sylvia Loomis, Peggy Pond Church, Joe Paull, Alice Howland and Eleanor Brownell). You come too!
